Women that live with uncomfortably large breasts know what it is like to have shoulder and neck pain, difficulty exercising, and the embarrassment of dealing with unwelcome stares or comments. Having breasts that are too large for your frame affects so many parts of your life.

Candidates for Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is safe for most adults of all ages. Generally speaking, female patients who experience pain, discomfort, and soreness as a result of the excessive weight of their breasts make good candidates for the procedure. Other symptoms that these women may experience include:

About the Procedure

The breast reduction procedure is typically performed through an incision shaped like an anchor, which is made around the areola and down the underside of the breast. Dr. Marcia Byrd can then remove excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin. The nipple and areola are then moved to their new position. Skin is shaped around the areola to give the breasts a new, uplifted contour. In general, the more skin that’s cut, the more it is possible to shape the breast. Once she has brought the breasts down to your desired size, the incisions are closed with fine sutures.

For the first few days, you need to limit your activities and movement to prevent breaking the stitches and stretching the scars. Most women can return to work after one to two weeks. Overhead lifting and strenuous movements should be avoided for several weeks.

Aftercare and Recovery

Recovery from breast reduction surgery is similar to that involved with other breast procedures such as breast augmentation and a breast lift. Patients should allow enough time for the body to heal before returning to work or other daily activities. For most patients, this means resting for approximately two weeks. Pay attention to your body’s unique timing and healing abilities to determine when it’s best to return to work.
